The origins, identity and political behaviors of the Karians remain the subject of intense discussion among specialists. The political organization of Western Asia Minor during the 4th century BC offers an opportunity to explore such questions; it was during this period that local dynasts, the Hekatomnids, reached a position of authority in the region that allowed them to fully express their political ambitions and to promote their own material culture.

Analyses of various aspects of this material culture have led scholars to describe the Hekatomnids in very different ways. They have been portrayed both as Persian dynasts and Proto-Hellenistic Kings, although they were neither Greek nor Persian. This ambiguity is the result of attempts to approach the cultural identity of 4th century Karia in the light of the cultural power of its neighbors, rather than as the result of an intricate process of cultural interaction that included both local traditions and foreign borrowings.

Hekatomnid Karia is representative of the complex phenomenon of hybrid cultures that would later flourish in the Hellenistic World. Gathering specialists on Karian research, each offering a different approach, this book aims to cover a wide number of sources, from archaeological to geographical and historical. The collection of essays provides an interdisciplinary perspective, intended to revitalize discussions of the cultural dynamics relevant to 4th century Karia.

The time period between the end of the Ubaid and the beginning of the Uruk expansion is one of the least known, yet most important eras in the ancient history of the Middle East. This era, which is often referred to as the "Post-Ubaid" period, is marked by major structural changes such as the rise of social hierarchies, technological innovations and economic reorganisation, which eventually led to the emergence of proto-states and cities. The recent finding of "Post-Ubaid-related" sites in regions deemed to be located far beyond the Ubaid purview, such as Cilicia, Cappadocia or the south Caucasus, has added another dimension to this picture: these sites suggest that the organic relationships more or less implicitly established between the "Post-Ubaid horizon" and the Ubaid world may in fact be much weaker than once thought. Through a systematic review of contemporary artefacts retrieved from recent and less recent excavations in the south Caucasus, eastern Anatolia and the Fertile Crescent, this book is an attempt to assess the available data from a broader, that is not Mesopotamian-specific, perspective.

De là naissent des tensions et des dynamiques culturelles qui, s'appuyant sur des logiques de distinction, conduisent à des transformations centrales des habitus au niveau des groupes sociaux, pouvant conduire à la formation de nouveaux champs sociaux.

This edited collection looks at how political parties in Turkey actually work, inside and out. Departing from traditional macro-level analyses, the book offers a new sociological approach to the study of political parties, treating them as non-unitary entities composed of many different groups and individuals who both cooperate and compete with one another.
The central proposition of the book is that parties must be studied as clusters of relationships in specific locales rather than as unitary ‘black boxes.’ This ground-up approach provides new insights into the internal workings of political parties; why parties gain and lose elections and other political resources; and the ways in which power is negotiated and exercised in Turkey and beyond.
Chapters include studies of Islamic and Islamist parties from the 1970s to the present, ethnic Kurdish parties, center- and extreme right parties, and the far left, as well as independent candidates. The authors pay particular attention to relations – and the blurry boundaries-- between parties and civil society groups, religious associations, non-governmental organizations, ethnic and socio-economic groups, and state institutions, and to the variability of external and internal party politics in different geographies such as Adana, Mersin, and Diyarbakir.

Abstract

The main goals of the 2011 campaign were the excavation of the Kepez tower, the West Church and the necropoleis. The tower of Kepez was excavated and black-gloss pottery indicates a date in the 3rd century BC.
The 2011 excavations in the West Church uncovered three Late Roman and Byzantine building phases. Among the finds from Late Antiquity was a well-preserved glass lamp with a Greek inscription and a marble figurine, possibly representing an apostle or a saint. The excavations in the necropolis uncovered eleven tombs in the Area 5B, located along the Sacred Way, completing the excavation initiated in 2010. New tombs were discovered in the territory east and south of the sanctuary. Finally, the three stone sarcophagi inside the Built Tomb were moved in order to facilitate complete excavation and the cleaning of all the interior space of this monumental tomb. The conservation of architectural marble was continued and included the conservation of an Ionic column capital and an anta capital from Andron B. Thomas Thieme and Pontus Hellström prepared the publication of the andrones.

Mülk Allah'indir est une phrase souvent inscrite sur la façade des immeubles auto-construits des périphéries d'Istanbul. Cette affirmation constitue une manière de légitimer lesdites constructions, en se référant à l'ordre de l'au-delà, implicitement sensé avoir le primat sur celui d'ici-bas, plus inique. Or le changement d'attitude des pouvoirs publics vis-à-vis de l'habitat " illégal " que l'on note depuis le début des années 2000 - dans le sens d'une plus grande intolérance - a pour effet de mettre en concurrence des ordres différents de légitimation de la propriété ou de l'usufruit du sol urbain (en voie de raréfaction). Dans ce contexte, cet article s'emploie à analyser les modalités actuelles de production de l'illégalité foncière et les modes de légitimation développés par les "occupants " menacés par les transformations enregistrées par le marché foncier. L'extrême relativité et labilité de la légalité foncière, produit d'un rapport de forces entre acteurs aux intérêts variés et changeants, ressort de l'analyse proposée.
