From Quarries to Rock-cut Sites. Echoes of Stone Crafting

The archaeological study of quarries focuses mainly on the reconstruction of the extraction process, while rock-hewn spaces have often been approached from the point of view of architectural styles or art-history. Nevertheless, a holistic structural approach to the study of these spaces could allow a better understanding of the agency of those who carved the stone.

Stone quarries and rock-cut sites have rarely been included in global studies of historical landscapes and few are the forums dedicated to the theoretical and methodological debate over the importance that these sites have for the understanding of past societies. To fill the gap, the proceedings volume aims at providing new data on sites located in Africa (Ethiopia, and Egypt), Europe (France, Croatia, Italy, Spain) and Asia (Turkey, Saudi Arabia) studied with a diachronic approach, as well as new theoretical reflections for the international debate on the archaeological investigation of rock-cut spaces and stone quarries.

Two directions structure this volume: the analysis of the individual rock walls, considering the study of tool traces as a proxy for understanding the carving phases, as well as the analysis of the structure (site/quarry) as a whole, by contextualizing the results of the study of the single walls.

The volume mainly targets researchers who are willing to discover quarries and rock-cut sites as aspects of the same mining phenomenon: places in which specific empirical and handcrafting knowledge related to stone working is expressed and conveyed, but also a wider audience that is interested in these peculiar and impressive sites.

Transforming critical agrarian studies: Solidarity, scholar-activism and emancipatory agendas in and from the Global South

This paper examines the challenges and opportunities faced by critical agrarian scholars in and from the Global South. We argue that despite the historical and structural limitations, the critical juncture of convergence of crises and renewed interest in agrarian political economies offers an opportunity for fostering a diverse research agenda that opens space for critical perspectives about, from and by the Global South, which is mostly absent in mainstream scholarship dominated by the Global North. We also propose doing so by enhancing solidarity to transform injustices within academia and other spaces of knowledge production and dissemination. To develop the argument, first, we reflect on the multiplicity of crises in rural areas and the changing character of social struggles, as well as the interlinkages between environmental crises and the re-emergence of critical agrarian studies that are reshaping the agrarian question. Then, we discuss the implications and conditions of the political agenda carried out by a scholar-activist movement working on agrarian studies from the Global South. Drawing on our experience as the Collective of Agrarian Scholar-Activists from the South (CASAS), we conclude by proposing three ways forward for enhancing solidarity through networks of scholar-activists: knowledge accessibility, cooperative organization, and co-production of knowledge.

While the advent of biomedicine saw new hope for the eradication of infectious diseases, only in the case of smallpox was this hope fulfilled. Why do some of the diseases for which humanity has found a cure continue to exist and circulate, and even to circulate widely? This book addresses this question through the case study of syphilis and an interdisciplinary perspective on the last century. It explores the reconfigurations of the fight against syphilis, from the mobilisation against a ‘social scourge’ until the recent ‘re-emergence’ of syphilis as a problem requiring renewed biomedical attention. The main originality of the book, however, lies in its focus on the quick ‘oblivion’ of both the disease and the fear it provoked, along with the ‘social’ solutions implemented against it, once penicillin was introduced in the 1940s. The structure of the book is also original: the remarkably concise main text authored by three historians of medicine is enriched by a dozen inserts written in French or English by eleven additional authors amongst whom are anthropologists, specialists of visual culture, medical doctors, a public health nurse, an association’s official, etc.

Souvent, l’étude des villes antiques se concentre sur les bâtiments monumentaux. Cependant, les quartiers résidentiels évoluent plus rapidement que les bâtiments religieux ou les édifices politiques et ont ainsi un potentiel alternatif pour l’étude d’une société. Ce volume de la série Boğazköy-Hattusa analyse le quartier résidentiel de la ville basse de Boğazköy au IIe millénaire av. J.-C. en se fondant sur les méthodes de l’archéologie numérique.

This book brings an intersectional perspective to border studies, drawing on case studies from across the world to consider the ways in which notably gender and race dynamics change the ways in which people cross international borders, and how diffuse and virtual borders impact on migrants' experiences.

By bringing together 11 ethnographies, the book demonstrates the necessity for in-depth empirical research to understand the class, gender and race inequalities that shape contemporary borders. In doing so the volume sheds light on how migration control produces gendered violence at physical borders but also through the politics of vulnerability across borders and social boundaries. It places embodied narratives at the heart of the analysis which sheds light on the agency and the many patterns of resistance of migrants themselves.

As such, it will appeal to scholars of migration and diaspora studies with interests in gender.
